Myriads of emotions coursed through as one watched the trailer of Nenjam Marappathillai starring S.J. Suryah. There were plenty of Ohh – dear, yeah and But’s.
The Ohh dear was when we heard that the movie belonged to the ” horror/ghost/supernatural” genre, a trend that has become virulently popular in Tamil moviedom. It felt as if Selva Raghavan too had succumbed to the lure of BUT the auteur retained his soul and thus enlivened the soul of Nenjam Marappathillai with his own stamp and vision.
The glimpses that’s offered in the trailer, thankfully does not fit into the typical Tamil horror movie genre. There is enough of humor (not the in your face comedy), a certain liveliness and perk , vital intense scenes and the necessary ingredients of “horror” movie – possession and haunting.
What sets the trailer apart is the sheer acting prowess of S.J.Suryah and the background score of Yuvan Shankar Raja.
S.J.Suryah who was a revelation in ‘Iraivi’ continues with his top notch game. Be it his nonchalance, his over confidences bordering on arrogance, the delusions of Ramasamy nee Ramsay, he brings out the various shades effortlessly.
Yuvan’s music is the soul that adds lustre to the clippings. But, where is the hand of Selvaraghavan? Has Suryah’s eclipsed SRN’s direction? No, Selvaraghavan looms in the character etching and his micro focusal’s of intimate problems, be it Ramsay, who is the king of everything in his world, but retains a sober mien outside that sees an occasional shredding by the inner demons or the wife who is addicted to drugs, who snorts it now and then. Selva leaves his mark.
Even though the movie is not a full blooded ghost movie, it, though has not escaped from the whirlpool of ghost movies, there is the mandatory possession scene, soul of the murdered haunting the people and then there is the finger that emerges from the buried earth scene. Though the latter scene is for thrill purpose, it somehow fails in it, moreover it strongly reminded us of “Sigappu Rojakkal” – that iconic scene from the Bharathiraja movie is forever etched in every hardcore movie lover’s memory.
At one point of time, the lead of the movie Ramasamy becomes Ramsay – is it a nod towards Ramsay brothers who were the kings of horror – unlikely prospect since they confined themselves to Bollywood or is it ‘Ram Says’ as in ‘ I decree’ – a Diktat that comes directly from the Ramasamy’s alter? Overall, the trailer of Nenjam Marappathillai has the pizzaz, unexpected flashes of humor ( a TM of Selva) , a complexed hero and apparently fine music by Yuvan.
