I have had a love & hate relationship with Sesame seeds or Til/Ellu as it is known in India. They usually were off my kitchen counter until I discovered the benefits of Sesame seeds to our health!
Though the seeds are tiny, they pack their weight in gold! Sesame seeds not only enhance the taste of the dish but the benefits of sesame seeds are numerous. They are densely packed with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals,organic compounds such as calcium,phosphorus,manganese, folate, copper, thiamine, zinc, protein, vitamin B6 and tryptophan.
India has incorporated the use of Sesame seeds into almost all forms of cooking from almost vedic period. Ayurveda absolutely worships sesame seeds for its numerous healing properties. There are three types of sesame 1. Black 2.Brown & 3.White. Of these, black sesame is best for your health since they are high on calcium and antioxidants.
Ayurveda suggests usage of Sesame oil for the external application on wounds. The oil can be used to alleviate joint pains, as part of hair oil, as a massage oil for babies (before bath). They are used to relieve constipation and in treatment of mouth ulcers and bad breath.
Sesame are high in protein, a boon to vegetarian who need to increase the intake of proteins.
Benefits of Sesame Seeds To Our Health
1. Sesame seeds prevent or reduce hair fall.
If you are plagued with falling hair or if your hair has become dry. Mix few spoons of triphala powder in warm sesame oil. mix it and apply on your scalp massaging it gently for greater absorption. Let your head get soaked in the oil for few hours, wash it off.
2. Sesame is best antidote for anemia and general weakness.
Sesame seeds especially the black colored ones are high in iron. A regular intake of sesame seeds with Jaggery is good for people with low vitality & for improving the iron count.
Sesame seeds are also good for lactating mothers
3. Sesame seeds are good for your heart.
Sesame seeds contain an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound called sesamol which prevents the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries.
The presence of monounsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid in the oil helps in reducing the bad cholesterol and increasing the good cholesterol in the body.
4. Sesame seeds offer relief from rheumatoid arthritis.
Sesame or Til seeds contain Copper which is essential in reducing inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. They are also good for bones because of its calcium and zinc content.

5. Sesame seeds whiten your teeth.
Sesame seed or sesame seed oil improves your oral hygiene. They remove plaque and whitens your teeth. Using Sesame oil in a procedure known as oil pulling will reduce the quantity of streptococcus in your mouth and saliva.
6. Sesame Oil helps in bowel moments.
If you are a victim of constipation, use til oil as your cooking oil. Sesame oil reduces the dryness in the intestine, lubricates it and improves the bowel movements.
7. Sesame seed nulls the poisonous effects of alcohol.
Sesame seed helps the liver by speeding up the decomposition of the poisonous effects of alcohol and other artificial beverages.
8. Sesame oil has anti-ageing properties.
Regular massage using Til oil removes blemishes, improves skin tone. They also reduce the signs of ageing.
9. Sesame seeds can be used to manage anxiety issues.
Tryptophan is an amino acid involved in the production of serotonin. Serotonin is mood regulator. Inadequate production of serotonin causes anxiety, irregular sleep patterns and depression.
10. Sesame seeds protect you from harmful effects of radiation.
Sesamol present in sesame seeds is said to protect the DNA from radiation. By acting as a shield, Sesame seeds prevent the mutation of DNA and/or emergence of new types of cancer.
